St Mary’s CE Primary School with St Mary’s Church Celebrates 380 Years of Excellence in Education
On Thursday 23rd January, St. Mary's CE Primary School in Twickenham celebrated their 380th Anniversary with a very special service at St. Mary's Church Twickenham marking a significant milestone in the school’s commitment to academic excellence, community service, and the development of well-rounded individuals.
Founded in 1645, St Mary’s School has built a rich tradition of providing high-quality education and fostering a supportive learning environment for pupils from 4 to 11 years old. Over the years, the school has become a cornerstone of the community, impacting the lives of thousands of pupils, parents and staff members.
“We are incredibly proud of everything St Mary’s has accomplished over the past 380 years, said Angela Abrahams, Headteacher: “This anniversary is not only a celebration of our history but also a look towards our future as we continue to nurture the potential of every pupil, shaping the citizens of tomorrow.”
Over 600 children, members of staff and special guests including the Mayor, trustees and governors gathered together to share the celebration. The children told the story of how St. Mary's school came to be. Year 3 set the scene of a busy street in 1645; year 4 performed a rewritten 'Hard knock life’ and one sang and danced to 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' complete with chimney sweep brushes, which represented the lives of many children before the school was started. Year 5 looked very dapper in top hats and bow ties performing 'I'm putting on my top hat' which was symbolic of the top hat used to collect donations by the parishioners at the time. Year 3 re-enacted the opening of the school and year 6, who wore their high vis, sang a song about building the school. Reception brought the party spirit, dancing to Kool and the Gang 'Celebrate'. Year 2 recited a specially written poem. All sang our school hymns, 'You are my brother' and 'Ave Maria' with beautiful harmonies by year 6. To finish off the marvelous day, generous parents had baked yummy cupcakes to share back at school.
